The Basics:
Tonight's episode saw the group deal with a new social media app around campus.
The Analysis:
I wasn't a huge fan of this episode, mainly due to it being another spoof/homage episode mere weeks after Donald Glover's departure episode. I didn't like the idea of the episode either. The dystopian future run by an app this episode had going on just didn't work for me. It felt a bit out there even for a Community episode. The episode also didn't have a strong story, and I honestly didn't know what the story was working towards until the end and the payoff was weak. This episode was really about Jeff and Shirley's friendship and how they barely hangout anymore. It makes sense as we saw their relationship go to the backburner after the first season, but it didn't really need a whole episode to get to the point. I appreciate the idea it was trying to convey, which is that we spend way too much time caring about social media and what other people think of us, but the way they went about it was just where it missed for me. Even the jokes weren't that funny to me. It felt like a dare-I-say "gas leak" episode.
The Takeaways:
It was a very meh night for Community. While they had a good idea, it just didn't hit the way it was supposed to. On a side note, I really don't like how they turned Abed into a side-character this week. I was hoping for some episodes focused on him and his dealing with Troy's departure. Hopefully next week will be strong.
