Agent Carter had its grand debut last night. The show has learnt a lot of lessons from its sister show, Agents of SHIELD. The series got off to a quick start and set-up a story worth following. It has the intriguing set of characters and a good setting. Overall, the episodes were solid and did a good job of getting us interested.
The show had a built in fanbase with fans of Peggy Carter and Howard Stark. The two characters never lost a step. Peggy is as headstrong and fantastic as ever. She is a great lead to the show and I can't wait to see her open up as a character a little more. It will also be interesting to see how the sexism of the 1940's grinds on her. Howard is as much a Stark as Tony is. He is a fun character and I absolutely love Dominic Cooper. Jarvis is an intriguing character to say the least. I'm not really sure if he is good or bad, but he was a very funny character to watch and I love the sidekick dynamic he has with Peggy. He will also be a fun character to watch grow.
The stories of each episode intertwined beautifully. They followed Peggy trying to figure out who is trying to frame Howard Stark for treason. That seems to be the story of the season (along with Leviathan), so it should be a really cool thing to watch play out. The little bombs Howard had helped create were certainly an interesting MacGuffin. I wonder if these will be a weapon of the season of just a brief appearance. After seeing the destruction they caused, it will be interesting to see if modifications are made to help a more serious threat to rise. I want to see more of this story, because it could really go in any direction. I really liked the fact that the series seems to be running the show in a connected way, rather than weekly procedurals.
The setting was pretty intoxicating. I love period pieces, and they did a really good job on everything. The set dressing was fantastic. The vibe was brilliant. The CGI to create an old 1940s New York City was also pretty good for an ABC show. I think the period piece setting is what gives this show a huge advantage amongst other similar shows.
Overall, the show had a good debut. It did enough to not be Agents of SHIELD and get me excited, but not enough to get me craving more. It is missing that special ingredient. Still, it is a show in its infancy and I will give it the whole season and probably another. I like the cast and I like the concept.
