My number one main concern is David S. Goyer. He is involved in this show, and I personally dislike this guy. He doesn't seem to get comic book heroes (just look at his comments about Martian Manhunter). He is very clearly doing his job for the money and not to please the fans or honor the comics. I hope he doesn't have a big role in this show, because that will help the show be the best it can be. Another problem, and it is a huge one, is NBC. They put the show on a Friday to begin with, which signals to me that they don't have high hopes for this show. The show could be great, but it could still get cancelled if it doesn't have more then 3 million viewers. That is tough on a Friday and for a comic book show. It is very concerning to me. These are two very big problems that this show will have to take on.
As for the positives, based on what I know about the character and what I have seen in the trailers, they have captured the essence of this character. Minus his smoking habit, the show seems to bring the Constantine from the comics and put him on the screen. Second, Matt Ryan just looks and acts like John Constantine. He seems to be perfect for the role. I have watched the trailers and Ryan seems pretty cool and seems to really make the role his. I think Ryan was a perfect casting.
Another thing I have been watching is that the show seems to want to expand its universe. The creators seem eager to include many easter eggs and nods to a bigger universe. They want this show to succeed. That is why they canned the Liv character and brought in Zed. The have shown that if something isn't working they will change it to try and make it better. Now it is NBC that is residing over this show, so they could be making awful decisions. But the creators want to keep this show faithful to the comics.
I am excited to see the supernatural side of the DC universe explored in this show. I don't know much about it, so it will be exciting to me. The show seems to embrace what it is. That is why it could succeed. This show looks like it has a lot of potential. I wish I could be a little more in-depth in this preview, but I am basing this purely off what I know and what I have seen. I will definitely watch this show, and hope it can help me learn a little bit about John Constantine.
'Constantine' premieres on Friday, October 24th @ 10/9c
