'Arrow; is entertaining into it's third season this year. As the show gets older, it expands its universe farther. The show is constantly improving and turning into a must watch for everyone. The people behind this show listen to the fans to improve this, all while tying the wants of fans to much larger fans. These big plans are what will make the third season of 'Arrow' the best comic book show on TV.
We all know the cast is mostly solid. There are still a few cringe-worthy moments from them, but I attribute that the some poor dialogue. The person I would like to see step-up most is Laurel. The majority of fans, me included, have spent the entirety of the show disliking her character. Towards the end of last season she started having what I call Laurel moments, times where she would have a backbone and actually become slightly likable, and I think they need to work more of those onto the show. Laurel is on an uptrend, so hopefully that will make her more likable. There are 3 more characters that need a bit more time to shine. Roy is one. I feel like the Mirakuru was the worst thing possible for him. He went from slightly likable to just plain annoying. Now that it is out of his system, I think we can expect a more likable, although still slightly annoying, version of Roy. Thea is also a character that could really breakout this season. I disliked her a lot in the first season, and then loved her in the second. She did a lot of growing in between seasons. I feel like that holds true this season. I think she will be evil and that will really make her even more interesting. I hope that doesn't fall flat. Diggle is the last character that needs more time. He had a couple episodes in season 2 where he would shine, but then he would be relegated to the sidelines for a few episodes. All of these characters need more time, and everyone (besides Diggle) needs some improvement overall.
The villain of the season definitely holds some promise. Ra's al Ghul has been announced as the big bad. That will certainly lead to some interesting stories of what he wants with the Arrow and lead to cool stuff with Malcolm Merlyn. I feel this Ra's and Oliver have a history in Hong Kong that has led to some bitterness. I don't know what angle the bad guy could attack from that would be different enough from Deathstroke and The Dark Archer. Maybe he goes after Team Arrow. That would be slightly different and the stakes would be a bit higher, I think. With Ollie admitting feelings for Felicity, Diggle having a baby, and Ollie responsible for Roy, there is a whole lot to lose. I am really curious to see what Ra's wants with Oliver.
The action is definitely something I am not worried about. It is always getting better. The stunt coordinator (Bam-Bam) definitely wants to do the best he can. It shows. The fight scenes are some of the best and most brutal on TV. I am really happy to hear that they are working to involve more parkour like aspects this season. I hope to see a different version of fighting with Ra's being included this season. Something more calculated and brutal, like hitting nerves and pressure points, while also just being plain brutal. I think Ra's will be even more of a match physically for The Arrow then Deathstroke was. The show seems to be getting bigger and better with action, and that is definitely exciting.
The universe building seems to be in full effect this season. With 'Arrow' introducing The Flash and superpowers last season, it seems like we will be getting more of that this season. My fear is that this season could get bogged down with universe building. It happens in movies ('Iron Man 2' and 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2') and produces a crappy product. The only way the world building could work is if they do it the same way that they have the past few seasons. Naturally introducing, hinting at, and putting easter eggs in the show has proven successful and they shouldn't change that formula. One other fear is that the show gets bogged down towards the end. Last season, after the Barry Allen introduction episodes, the show fizzled a bit. The second half of the season lost a lot of steam, and in my mind, limped to the finish line. They spent way too many episodes explaining things and building towards the big showdown. The finale was still amazing, but just about everything in between got a tad boring. I have the fear that it will happen again this season after 'The Flash' crossover. They need to keep the intensity up all season, no matter how. Don't sacrifice quality, but don't get stuck waiting for the finale.
I have few concerns about 'Arrow' season 3. The brains of the operation have proven time and time again that they can be the best on TV. Season 3 has bigger things on it's mind, and even though it could suffer because of that, I don't think it will. Everyone involved truly loves the show and wants to make it the best that they can. The show improved from the first season to the second. It looks like that trend will continue this season. All the ingredients of the show give it the potential to be the best comic book show on TV.
