Spoilers Ahead
The Basics:
Slade visits the Queen family in the modern day. During the flashbacks they declare war on Ivo's ship.
The Analysis:
I'll start with the flashbacks this week. It is finally time for the crew to take Ivo's freighter. Watching this Slade from the modern day Slade, you could definitely see a difference and I have to give props to Manu Bennett for pulling it off. I loved his line about him calling Ollie his brother. Sara warns Ollie that he needs to be the one to kill Ivo, otherwise Ivo will tell Slade what really happened. Ollie doesn't do this and Slade finds out the truth. This was another fantastic scene. The emotion from Bennett was especially great. As Ollie and Sara and some of the other prisoners try to escape the ship, Ollie gets held back by Slade. This leads to a tense situation in which Slade gets Ivo to explain Shado's death. Seeing Ivo's reaction to this is a far cry from where he was a few weeks ago, and that is most likely due to Slade's menacing appearance. He is terrifying in these few moments. Ivo's part ends with him getting what he deserved. Also in this scene is the promise that Slade makes Oliver, which was just spine-chilling. As for modern day, it was a continuation of last week's cliffhanger. This was actually just a cover-up so that Slade could get surveillance in the house. There were some great parts to these parts of the episode. I was absorbed by the scene with Team Arrow in the foyer of the Queen Mansion and I thought it was great seeing genuine surprise on Slade's face about Sara being alive. Then before Dig can take a shot at Slade, a mysterious figure knocks him out. I am guessing that this is the Huntress. The last scene at the end with him watching the Queen house with his eye-patch off was chilling and showed how far he was willing to go to avenge Shado's death.
The Takeaways:
This was an epic episode. Slade, Slade, and more Slade. Manu Bennett has made this his role and is equal parts creepy, intimidating, and mysterious. We know what his end goal is, but not how he will achieve it. I hope we can not ignore what happened in this episode, in next week's episode. It is shaping up to be a truly amazing season finale.
