Some Spoilers Ahead
The Flash has gotten off to a great start, and that trend continued this week. The episode followed the formula that we have gotten used to, but it still managed to mix some surprises in. The show even managed to have a successful episode where Barry was the focal point for the entire episode. When the show is doing that three episodes in, that is a good thing.
The episode followed another villain this week. This villain, aptly titled "The Mist" by Cisco, wasn't anything to ride home about. He certainly looked cool when he was in his mist form, but he didn't do anything great. Instead, he was relegated to sulking around and throwing off a creepy vibe. He did give the story real stakes by threatening Joe West and giving Barry an actual opponent that could beat him, rather than challenge him. The villains on the show haven't been completely memorable, but that looks to change next week with the introduction of Captain Cold.
Barry not being the focal point of the episode was a great decision. I was itching to learn more about the other characters. We really got to dig into Caitlin, Cisco, and Iris this week. And to narrow that down even more, Caitlin. She has been a fairly distant character since the premiere, but we got to see why tonight. Robbie Amell was fine in his brief time, but he didn't really make an effect on me. Still, it will be nice to see him reappear and Caitlin's reaction to that. I also liked the fleshing out of Barry and Caitlin's relationship. It seemed to hint at a bit more then friends, so keep on eye on that. We also got to see a more vulnerable side to Cisco this week. He has been fairly chipper since the show started, and I have been wondering if we would ever see a serious moment from him. It happened this week and it brought a certain depth to his character. And Iris finally came clean about her relationship with Eddie. There wasn't a whole lot to it, but I am glad that they kept this from dragging on and dragging the show down.
Barry was present this week. We didn't learn anything new about his powers, but we did see him struggle with them. His number one goal is to get his dad out of prison, and he considered using his powers to break his dad out. That is obviously not a superhero thing to do. I was glad we didn't see him do anything drastic like that, because it just wouldn't work well. A lot of what Grant Gustin did for Barry Allen this week was nice. He added a nice couple of subtle glances and reactions to both Caitlin and Iris that worked well. As for The Flash, there were a few cool moments. I did enjoy Barry's reference to The Flash Museum in the comics. I also liked him vibrating/distorting his face, so his dad wouldn't recognize him.
The episode once again ended with a peak of Harrison Wells secret life. This time it was in the past with him looking at Barry, making sure he gets struck by that lightning bolt. It was a bit underwhelming considering the past two weeks, but did confirm that Wells knows every little thing about Barry. I am really getting an evil vibe from him. I am seriously craving more information on Wells and who he is and what his plan is. The show is fantastic in all ways (sans villains) and Wells is the most interesting piece of the puzzle. I think in the coming weeks, we need an episode dedicated just to Wells and what his story is.
Overall, The Flash continues to keep making good episodes. That is a good thing, considering other shows (i.e. Gotham and Agents of SHIELD) are taking/took way too long to figure out what they want to be. The producers knew exactly what they wanted with the show and they hit the ground running. The show has been consistently great (not Arrow great yet) and I really can't wait to see this unfold over the course of a full season.
