Spoilers Ahead
The Basics:
Ted and the Mother go on their first date, and while on their date Ted tells the story of Gary Blauman at the wedding.
The Analysis:
I have to start out by saying this is the best episode of HIMYM in quite a while. It felt similar to the old ones and the chemistry between Ted and the Mother was magnificent. It was just amazing. This is actually the first episode this season that makes me sad we only have three episodes left (the season finale is a double episode). This episode is essentially Ted and the Mother's first date, three days after Robin's wedding, which means Ted doesn't move to Chicago. I just can't get over how great it is to see Ted and the Mother on screen interacting with one another. Ted and her have so much more chemistry than any of the other women Ted has dated over the past 9 seasons. As far as the Gary Blauman story goes, it is either a love or hate relationship with him. Barney's bit about him stealing his accidental curly fry was the funniest, but the most important was when we found out the impact he had on James' (Barney's brother) life. James was the guy he cheated on Tom (his husband) with. This all led to one of the best tracking shots in series history, potentially better then the two minute date. It was used to give us a goodbye to all the big recurring guest stars (minus Stella and Victoria, although we know how their lives turn out). I was surprised by the sheer amount of guests they were able to get back, but it was a beautiful scene and really started to feel like we were nearing the end. Back in the Ted and Mother subplot, we saw Ted and the Mother run into one of her ex-boyfriends (the one that proposed about three days before the wedding) and her realize that she wasn't ready to date. Ted walks her back home and instead of doing anything Ted would do, he leaves. I thought this was one the best character growths we have seen in the show. Instead of Ted trying to force it, he left because he had a feeling she was the One and it would work out. Boy did it. It ended with their first kiss (which was awkwardly charming) and them continuing the date, which was again fantastic. In many ways this felt like a classic HIMYM episode, with no goofiness or slapstick humor. The Mother and Ted's scenes just popped off the screen, and I am really glad we at least get to see their first date as that was something I've always wanted. With three episodes left, it is starting to feel like the end and I am a bit sad about. Hopefully they give these characters the right send-off.
On a brief side-note, all those rumors about the Mother dying or being dead are ridiculous. I do not believe for a second that the creators of this show would end this show with such a bleak and unhappy ending. It would be such an awful ending. The creators have one more big trick up their sleeve. I'm just hoping the series ends with a brief callback to something like the porch or everyone meeting in McLaren's for a big event.
