SPOILERS AHEAD
The Basics:
Abed and Annie argue about which one of their loved ones should move in. Hickey, Jeff, and Shirley find a collection of textbooks and attempt to sell them.
The Analysis:
First off, I have to say I loved the opening with the Dean's freestyle rap apology about payday. Especially his increasing intensity and then his spazz out of emotions at the end. We need more Dean this season. Annie's brother is in town, while Abed's girlfriend, the lovely Brie Larson, is also coming over the same night. They decide to do a "double date" per se, but it ends up turning into a competition on who could possibly move in. Annie wants to win just to get a victory against her mom, which is understandable, but didn't exactly work the best as we don't know very much about what happened with Annie's addiction. Abed wanted to win because he was trying to not mess up his relationship with his girlfriend Rachel. That is where this episode was made for me. It started to deal with the absence of Troy a little more, with Annie and Abed both using their "person" to try to fill the void left. And Abed's apology to Rachel was beautiful. I particularly loved his line about people always leaving just because of its fantastic delivery. As for the underground book selling operation with Britta, Shirley, Hickey, and Jeff it just felt a bit off and out of place. I enjoyed it, but it was still a bit weird. I don't know, I guess it was just placement and a bit of poor execution. Overall, though, this episode was meant to deal with Troy's departure and it did a fine job of that.
The Takeaways:
We need more of the Dean. Where has he been this season? Also keep bringing back Brie Larson. Her relationship with Abed is great. A solid episode, even though the B story felt oddly disjointed from the rest of the episode.
