Some Spoilers Ahead
Agents of SHIELD has had a much improved second season. It has turned itself around from a middling first season. This episode was one of the best episodes of SHIELD yet. It had great action, great character story, and a few more mysteries that need to be answers. The show is keeps on rolling and that is a good thing.
A key part of the story this week was Ward. We saw the introduction of his brother, Senator Christian Ward. He is a sketchy guy at best, with some hidden motivations. I assume he is only in it for the Senator job, but I can't shake the feeling that he is HYDRA. The one thing I know for sure is that both Ward brothers are lying about one another. I am happy that Coulson made a deal with the Senator to get Talbot off of SHIELD's back, though. And props to the producers for throwing in a little classic Coulson this week. And I am wondering what Ward will do now that he has supposedly escaped SHIELD/government capture.
A truly heart-breaking part of this week's episode was the examination of the Fitz-Simmons relationship. We saw the cracks last week, and Fitz really let loose this week. He told Simmons all his bottled up feelings about her leaving and it looked bad on her. It does look bad that she left him when he needed her most, but it also made sense. He wasn't getting better with her there, so try leaving and see if that works. It is obvious that Simmons cares deeply for Fitz and wants to help him get better, but seeing him shut her out was pretty sad. On the positive, it did give Fitz and Mac a little more time to bond. And I thought Simmons thanking him was very sweet. Still it is pretty rough to watch.
May, Morse, and Hunter all went on a mission together. We got to see a little more inside the Hunter/Morse relationship and I still can't see what their problem with each other is. Seeing them work together and kick butt was pretty awesome, though. And it seemed like they were starting to become friends at the end, so it could work out nicely. May was awesome as always. She kicked butt and also had a couple funny moments mixed in. This was a pretty entertaining story overall.
Some of the stuff that didn't work was Skye, who was just around this week, and the SHIELD imitators. The SHIELD imitators didn't do much, but they did have cool weapons. On the flip side, we now have Talbot off of SHIELD's tail, so they have a little more freedom. I also wasn't a fan of Simmons bowing up to Ward. I get it, but it wasn't too believable, because it is so out of character for her.
Overall, SHIELD was very entertaining this week. It layed off some of the super heavy HYDRA stuff, and instead focused more on the time. These character power hours are what work best for the show. Hopefully they make more episodes like this. They don't have to go break-neck speed all the time. This week was one of SHIELD's best episodes. Sadly, SHIELD will be on hiatus for a few weeks.
